The convenience store industry is constantly evolving, driven by shifting consumer preferences, emerging technologies, and new business strategies. To stay ahead, retailers are adapting in innovative ways, from rethinking their offerings to streamlining operations. Our Sales team recently attended the CStore Connections conference. Tracie Nall, Account Manager, and John Coyle, Vice President of Sales, give their insights on the biggest trends shaping the industry and what the future may hold.
What are the biggest trends currently shaping the convenience store industry?
Tracie: Foodservice continues to shape the modern-day c-store. More and more retailers are focused on being “food-first” and you can see this with their store design and fresh food offerings.
John: Foodservice continues to lead the way in trends in new items to drive demand, but also in how retailers are looking across menus to use common ingredients and sharpen offerings to make it easier for their workers and increase profits.
Have you seen any new technologies being adopted in c-stores recently?
Tracie: Customers are leaning into loyalty, mobile ordering, and delivery programs to provide better service for their customers.
John: The adoption of AI technologies is rapidly growing. Companies are using voice capture analysis to identify customer interactions and detect patterns and trends. Market demographics tools are also being leveraged to predict sales and fuel demand at potential future locations, providing valuable insights for site selection.
How are customer preferences changing? Are there any new products or services in high demand?
Tracie: Yes, the new trend is NA (non-alcohol) beverages. I believe this is a trend that is going to continue for a long time and retailers should find a space for this new product set.
John: The hot & sweet flavor trend continues to be a driver for stores, with several chains looking to expand their offering this year.
Where do you see the industry heading in the next year?
Tracie: In the coming year, I see retailers increasingly embracing AI to enhance their daily operations and gain valuable insights. Many are already utilizing AI to improve employee training and elevate the customer experience, and this trend is likely to expand as technology evolves.
John: We see further consolidation in the industry overall. However, many chains we spoke to talked about building rather than buying. As the size and style of convenience stores have changed much in recent years, these chains feel the only way to have the modern store their customers expect is to build something new. Inside the store, we are working with clients who are looking to leverage efficiency gains and improve processes and workflow for their staff.
As the c-store landscape continues to change, staying informed is more important than ever. Understanding industry trends and adapting to new opportunities can make all the difference in staying competitive.
