As a company with over 170 employees, there are a variety of team members who have taken different career paths to get to where they are at ADD Systems today. Some new employees have just begun their journey at ADD, while many have been here for a while. Others are in the thick of their careers and are a stabilizing force for their departments. Ryan DiCamillo, an Application Specialist for the Retail/BI Department, is just that. Whether it’s being a supportive team member within his department or helping clients get the most out of their ADD eStore and Atlas Reporting software, Ryan wears many hats. We caught up with him at the 2025 NACS Show, the premier convenience store expo that attracts brands from all business types across the c-store landscape. Hear what Ryan had to say about his role at ADD Systems, as well as attending the NACS Show.
What are the responsibilities of an Application Specialist at ADD Systems?
My role, in particular, is on the convenience retail team, working with our clients who operate a convenience store chain. A chain typically comes to the ADD Systems sales team with either a problem they are trying to solve with their existing back office system, or they might be simply looking for a new software solution to gain efficiency. After they become a client, they come to my team, and we do a discovery meeting with them. There, we look into how they’re doing business, including their processes and business rules, and we put that into our software and the framework that we have built. It’s my job to not only train the client, but to find out how they do things, and put their best practices into motion with ADD eStore.
Sometimes it’s the other way around, and I function as a consultant. If a client comes in and they’re not doing something correctly, I can share the best practices I’ve learned through my experience with other clients. I can say to them, “Well, here’s how our other users do it. And that might help you out as well.” It’s a little bit of training, a little bit of coaching, and it’s a little bit of understanding what they do and how we can fit it into our ecology.
What are some c-store challenges that ADD software alleviates?
People come to us with a lot of diverse challenges, and I think a lot of it depends on the size of their business and the skillsets of their team. A lot of the challenges they have are the exact same challenges that other companies are looking to solve with software. One of the most common challenges is how to get at their data. And how to track and manage inventory. Helping them make these decisions is key. Our software can import, track, and analyze more store data than they ever had visibility into before.
We also have clients that come from no software at all, where they’re just using a Point-of-Sale (POS) device, and don’t even have exposure to software. We also have clients who aren’t happy with their current software, and they come over to us asking for a change or looking for an elevated experience. And then you’ll have long-term clients who drive the development direction of our software. Really, everybody’s looking to solve their own particular challenge.
So what are the problems? They’re everybody’s problems, right? It’s sales, it’s tracking the employees at the store, it’s reducing shrinkage and theft. It’s managing lottery, it’s managing inventory. How do I track stuff that’s coming in and going out the front, or even out the back? So, really, everything that encompasses every aspect of retail, we try to solve those problems.
What do you enjoy the most about your role?
What I enjoy most about it is the people that I work with. They are smart, so when I solve problems and when I accomplish tasks, it a mutual feeling of success. This is something I’m sure people can relate to.
When you are a productive member of the team and you get something done or you achieve something that contributes to the whole, it feels good. That’s the exciting part. That’s what drives the work that I do. I enjoy being a member of the team. I like problem solving, I like the challenging, and I like getting it done.
How has your NACS Show experience been so far?
It’s awesome! You’re with your team, you’re going out to dinners, and you meet clients on the floor. It’s also reinvigorating and inspiring. Just to get out and see what’s happening in the industry that you’re actively contributing to is very reinvigorating.
ADD Systems really carries weight in the industry, too, so I feel like I contribute to this industry. I am a part of it. And that is super energizing. It’s a good feeling.
