Integrating new talent is pivotal for moving petroleum and convenience store software forward every day. We’re expanding our team with skilled professionals. Since the start of 2023, we’ve onboarded nearly 20 individuals across diverse departments, with a notable emphasis on engineering and quality assurance (QA). We thought our customer base would like to get to know some of our new employees on both a professional and personal level! The first interviewee in this new employee series is Sue Torlucci, one of ADD’s Software Design Specialists!
Describe your new role at ADD Systems
I am a Software Design Specialist for ADD Systems. As new enhancements are voted in yearly by the ADD User Groups (AUG), my responsibility is to create design documents outlining the challenges identified and specify ADD’s proposed solution. We meet with the AUG group to ensure our solution resolves their reported issues. Once the design has been approved, the design documents are passed along to the development team for implementation.
Where are you originally from?
I grew up on a small grain farm near Starkweather, North Dakota, graduating high school in a class of 17 students.
What is your current role and what types of projects are you working on?
I’m currently working on the 2023 enhancements voted up by the AUG and E360 design work.
What is your favorite part of your job so far?
The employees at ADD are wonderful – intelligent, collaborative, considerate, friendly, and hard-working; all traits that contribute to a challenging, enjoyable work environment.
What are you most excited to learn about in the industry?
It’s all new to me – I’d never thought about the coordination of efficiently dispatching drivers; the challenge of buying products to resell at a competitive price. I really enjoy the AUG user meetings to learn more from our users.
Why are you drawn to your new role? Otherwise, how does your role serve a deeper meaning for you?
Throughout my career, I’ve always been a champion of the end-user, making sure we are providing features that are consistent, and easy to use, and improve their interaction with the software. I like to make things better for others.
What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Creative, Reliable, and Honest.
What are some of your favorite hobbies?
Analysis/Research – colleges and cars, most recently
Reading
Watching TV – the science fiction genre, in particular, like Resident Alien and the Star Trek franchise
Watching Ice Hockey
Puzzles
What is a good piece of advice to follow?
We all stumble and make mistakes. It’s what you do next that’s more important.
Who, professionally and personally, has made the biggest impact on you?
My parents had the biggest impact on me. Growing up in a small farming community, I was fortunate to participate in many diverse activities: 4-H, speech contests, spelling bees, music contests, cheerleading, band, chorus, and community service. Working on the farm taught me to roll up my sleeves and get the job done, even when it’s dirty, smelly, and physically exhausting. My mom ran the household and actively volunteered, showing me the importance of giving back and being part of something bigger than oneself.
What is a surprising aspect about you people might not expect?
I listen to Taylor Swift’s music as much as possible. I watched the Eras movie in the theatre with my 20-year-old daughter and realized I did not know many of her songs. Afterwards, I started watching videos and documentaries, and listening to her albums, resulting in me becoming a fan, a “Swiftie.”
What is the most important value a company can have?
To do what’s right; maintain integrity – even when it’s difficult.
Stay tuned for more employee interviews, just like this in the coming months! We’ll be interviewing employees from quality assurance, programming, customer support, and more.
